Your Home Treadmill Safety Checklist

The whole idea behind preventive maintenance is to keep your home treadmill functioning to its optimal performance. If you regularly workout on equipment – it wears down. Here, we have put together a list of tips you can use to keep your treadmill operating efficiently.

Just like vehicles have scheduled maintenance recommendations and require predictable oil changes, treadmills have specific upkeep recommendations as well.
Precor – one of the most well-known fitness equipment brands recommends specific preventive maintenance activities weekly, monthly, quarterly and semi-annually to extend the life of your treadmill, reduce risk, and provide the optimum running experience, including:

Weekly –

Dust and clean all surfaces. A dry towel works best to clean the running belt and deck, while a damp lint free cloth works great on the touch screen. While you’re at it ensure the safety lanyard is still connected properly, the power cord is not damaged, and the treadmill is clearly leveled on the floor. It’s also ideal to unplug the treadmill from the wall, plug it back in and ensure the treadmill still turns on and off.

Monthly –

Use a damp towel to clean the treadmill’s running belt and a small wire brush to clean the drive belt and pulley. Visually inspect the running deck and belt to make sure they are in good condition. Check all nuts, bolts, and other fasteners. Check all wires, cables and contact points where required. Vacuum the floor underneath the treadmill to ensure no foreign objects impair the traction or stability of the treadmill.

Quarterly –

Check the tracking and alignment of the running belt and drive belt. Check the front and rear rollers. Remove the hood and vacuum the compartment and motor controller fan to remove any dust or foreign objects.

Semi annually –

Lubricate the deck surface according to manufacturer’s specs. Check and calibrate if necessary. Check the owner’s manual for any suggested product specific maintenance at certain mileage.

Remember – Preventative maintenance is important because proper maintenance of fitness equipment will ensure a safer workout and maximize the life of the fitness equipment. Which, in turn, creates a higher ROI on both your treadmill purchase and your time spent breaking a sweat.
